Last week I covered half of my son’s Fire Truck Birthday Party and here is the rest of the story.

Star sandwiches- meat and cheese on bread, simple.
Fruit Salad
Big Sandwiches- I bought bakery fresh french bread the morning of and put meat, cheese, and lettuce on the loaves. With the following condiments on the side: mayonaise, mustard, chipotle mayonaise, pepperoncinis, and tomatoes. The sandwiches went over really well and were cost effective.

Modern Parties~ Fire Truck Birthday, part I Mon, 21 Oct 2013 19:55:42 +0000 Firetruck Party

We celebrated my son’s ( Lil’ G) 3rd birthday this past weekend. I hosted at the Paso Robles Children’s Museum and what a great idea that was. It had been raining here for over a week, it was a relief to have a place for the kids to run around and let out some of their pent up energy. For me the best part was that I was in and out within three hours without the party aftermath to clean up at my house. Here is the first part of the Fire Truck Party. More to come…

Paso Robles Children’s Museum. This was a great venue for the kids. I rented the party room they have available and the kids had a blast! The building is in an old volunteer firehouse and so the Fire Truck theme for the party was born.

Paso Rpbles Childrens Museum

I ordered these fantastic invitations from Inviting Printables. These invitations and matching thank-you cards were sent to me via email in a PDF. I placed a photo order online at Walgreens and they were ready to be picked up within the hour. I love the look and they really set the mood for the Vintage Fire Truck theme I was going for.

Firetruck Invitation

With the party at the Children’s Museum I was able to keep the decor simple but festive. The table was lined with a fun fire hat fabric from Glitzy Girlz Twinkle.

Firetruck Birthday Table Decorations

Birthday Bunting: I had no intention of creating another bunting for this party. At the last minute I caved and whipped out a Fire Truck themed bunting. This bunting has been hanging up at home all week to celebrate Lil’G’s birthday week.

Birthday Bunting

Mini Water Bottles: The labels for the water bottles were designed by Paper and Pigtails and I printed them at home. The labels I used for these small bottles were from Creative Label Concepts. They have every label imaginable.

Fire Truck Water Labels

Balloons: I used red and yellow balloons tied to the gift baggies to add flair to the room. They were tied off with bakers twine (a favorite of mine). hint: I used a helium tank you can get at Michael’s, be sure to use a 40% off coupon and it’s a deal!

See you next week with more details from the party.

Sweet and Spicy Mon, 21 Oct 2013 19:19:00 +0000 In typical female style I couldn’t decide between something spicy or sweet so I will share both with you. Can you decide?

Enchilada Meatballs

Enchilada Meatballs

2 cups crumbled cornbread
1 (10 ounce) can enchilada sauce, divided
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck
1 (10 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup shredded Mexican cheese blend, divided

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a large bowl, combine the cornbread, half of the enchilada sauce, half of the cheese, and the salt. Crumble the beef into the mixture, and blend well using your hands. Shape meat into 1 inch balls, and place on a 10×15 inch jellyroll pan, or any cookie sheet with sides to catch the grease.
Bake for 18 to 22 minutes in the preheated oven, until the meat is cooked through.
While the meatballs are cooking, warm the tomato sauce and remaining enchilada sauce in a saucepan. Remove the meatballs from the pan using a slotted spoon, and place in a serving dish. Pour the heated sauce over them, and sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top. Provide toothpicks for serving.

(Just a side note and I haven’t tried it but think this would make a great meatloaf)

Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars

Chocolate Chip Toffee Bars

2 1/3 c. flour
2/3 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. butter
1 egg, slightly beaten
1 (12 oz.) pkg. chocolate chips
1 c. chopped nuts – I used pecans, but walnuts or macadamias would be great, too.
14 oz. sweetened condensed milk
10 oz. Skor toffee bits
Stir together flour and brown sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add egg and mix well. Stir in 1 1/2 c. chocolate chips and all of nuts. Reserve 1 1/2 cups of this mixture and press remaining into a greased 9×13 inch pan. Bake for 10 minutes at 350. Pour milk over hot crust and top with 1 1/2 cups toffee bits. Sprinkle remaining crumbs over top plus remaining chips. Bake 25-30 more minutes. Top with remaining toffee bits.

Bon Appetit!

Cake Tips Sun, 20 Oct 2013 14:02:18 +0000 Looking for some cake baking tips? Wiltons website is my new favorite place for advice on baking cakes and decorating. I’m currently in the process of making the “smash” cake for my friends one year olds birthday party this weekend. Pictures to follow, if I’m brave enough to share and the cake turns out. 🙂 So far I baked the cake this morning and it came out of the pan without sticking. Success! Next step is fondant and decorating. Keep your fingers crossed for me and check out the Wiltons website for your own cake baking inspiration.

Zebra Cake Sun, 20 Oct 2013 13:57:42 +0000 My first cake was a success. I spent my afternoon baking, frosting, rolling fondant, decorating, and praying it would all come together in one piece. Here she is……my mini masterpiece.

Now I can sleep in peace. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Modern Parties ~ Zebra 1st Birthday Party Sun, 20 Oct 2013 05:36:54 +0000 Kyla’s 1st Birthday turned out fabulously. Her Mom Trisha did such a great job on this party and I had so much fun helping her. Trisha chose the Zebra print and pink to be the theme. It turned out great. The printable package we found on Etsy by, Allison Powell Designs was perfect for the party. The banner, invitations, thank you cards, cupcake toppers, tags, and so much more was provided with the package. We arranged tissue paper poms throughout the house and coordinating balloons.

Party Favor Station: Candy, cookies and baby snacks for each guest to choose from. The kids filled their bags and tied them with the cute “Thank You” from Kyla.

Zebra Party Candy Favors

The custom made zebra and pink Kyla cookies were ordered from TRbrown. They were yummy!

The “Thank You” tags were part of the printable package we ordered. I printed the tags and applied a grommet to the corner for the ribbon.

The smash cake was rather large. Large enough to actually feed 50 people. Modern Parties - Ninja Party Kyla made a dent and it was adorable watching her eat her cake.

DIY ~ Piñata Sun, 20 Oct 2013 04:37:51 +0000 I’ve been in a piñata kick these past couple months.

My first piñata was the Death Star for TJ’s Star Wars party;

Star Wars Pinata

Then the most time-consuming was Amelia’s rose piñata for her 1st Birthday;

Rose Pinata

I’m working on ideas for Brayden’s Ninja piñata but thought I would share my step by step tutorial on how to make your own….

DIY Pinata

1 large 17″ round balloon. (check your local party supply store for the large round balloons)

Mix 1 part flour to 2 parts water until you have a thin glue like consistency. Cut 2″ newspaper strips and dip into the flour mixture while scraping off the excess glue. Apply to the balloon and let dry completely. Repeat this for 3-4 layers. When the piñata is fully dry pop the balloon and cut a hole large enough to stuff with treats. Have fun and decorate!

DIY Pinata

FYI: I would start making the piñata at least 5 days before your party. It takes several hours for each layer to fully dry.

Monopoly Party Sun, 20 Oct 2013 04:21:33 +0000 I survived our first sleepover! The party was great and most importantly TJ had a blast. I love creating new memories for my kids. Here are the party details:

I made all the decorations with one classic Monopoly game.

Monopoly Theme Party

I created cupcake toppers using the Monopoly houses, hotels and chocolate coins. My favorite cupcake lady at Clementine Cupcakes put this all together for me. I just love the cupcake liners!

Monopoly Party Cupcakes

I also had a cake made by Cassie’s Custom Cakes. The boys loved having both a cupcake and cake…..that kept the party interesting and louder.

Monopoly Cake

Party favors: Monopoly Millionaire game, dice lollipop and chocolate gold coins.

Monopoly Birthday Favors

Another fun party and great theme chosen by my son TJ. Now onto planning the next party. 1 down 3 more to go from now until April!

Savory Cups and Cupcakes Sun, 20 Oct 2013 03:36:42 +0000 Cupcakes are everywhere. While the yummy, sweet ones I now leave to the masters at Clementine Cupcakes and Occasional Cakes, I had to find a new use for my cupcake pans! I came across several tasty, savory ones. Whether you are up for Mexican, Asian or comfort food these cupcake size treats are perfect for your next summer party on the patio, or Sunday brunch.

Taco Cupcakes

For Cinco de Mayo tomorrow, try Taco Cupcakes by The Girl who ate Everything along side a pitcher of Margaritas. You could easily try these with ground pork, turkey or make them vegetarian, and maybe add some sliced jalepenos too.

Quiche Prosciutto Cups

For brunch try Quiche in Prosciutto Cups from Epicurious. I might try a green olive tapenade in place of the black olives. Do I hear mimosas calling?

Asian Salad in Wonton Cups

Asian Chicken Salad in Crispy Wonton Cups by The Food in my Beard. I really like the look and flavor of the shredded carrots, cucumber and shallots in this recipe.

Mini Crab Cakes

The crab filing for these Mini Crab Cake cupcakes from Epicurious can be made the day before. I love that the crust is made with panko bread crumbs, which are lighter and crispier than traditional bread crumbs.

Chicken Pot Pie Cupcakes

For colder nights these Chicken Pot Pie Cupcakes by Bev Cooks look super easy. I’d like to try them in a cast iron cupcake pan over a summer campfire.

Mango Curry Shrimp Wonton Cups

These Mango Curry Shrimp Wonton Cups from Epicurious are packed with flavor and would go great with your favorite Sauvignon Blanc or dry Riesling.
